Audio first: what Mp3ify is built for

Mp3ify is a browser tool for people who want the sound of a YouTube video, not the picture. A lecture you want to hear on a walk, a live set for your music app, a voice-over you need to cut in an editor: each of these needs a different audio file. This page helps you choose one, and the converter above makes it.

The format menu has two groups. Under Audio you find MP3, M4A, WEBM, AAC, FLAC, OPUS, OGG and WAV. Under Video you find MP4 from 144p up to 4K, for the times you also need the picture.

Three audio files compared

We converted one public 93-second clip with each audio option to see what you actually get. Your numbers will change with the length of the video, but the order of the file sizes stays the same.

FormatWhat we receivedSize for 93 secondsGood for
MP3320 kbps, 44.1 kHz, with the video thumbnail as cover artabout 3.9 MBMusic libraries, car stereos, older players
M4AAAC sound in an MP4 containerabout 0.6 MBPodcasts and talks on a phone with little free space
WAVUncompressed 16-bit PCM, 44.1 kHz stereoabout 16 MBEditing, mixing and sample work

FLAC is in the menu too. In the same test it came back as a 24-bit file of about 15 MB, so it is an option when your editor accepts lossless files and you want them a little smaller than WAV.

A higher number does not add detail

YouTube stores the sound of a video in compressed form. Mp3ify converts that track into the file type you pick. A 320 kbps MP3 or a WAV file can hold the sound without further loss, but it cannot bring back detail that the upload never had. If a song sounds thin on YouTube, it will sound thin in every format.

So pick by what happens next, not by the biggest number. Only listening? Take MP3 or M4A. Cutting, fading or mixing? Take WAV, so that each save in your editor does not compress the sound once more.

Convert a video to audio in four steps

  1. Copy the address of a public YouTube video, or a Shorts link, from the browser bar or the Share button.
  2. Paste it into the field that says "Paste Your URL...".
  3. Open the format menu and choose an entry from the Audio group, for example MP3 or WAV.
  4. Press Download. A progress bar runs while the file is made; for short clips this took 15 to 25 seconds in our tests. When the card says "Download ready", press its Download button to save the file.

The file is named after the video title, so you can find it again in your Downloads folder.

Pages for one format

If you already know the file type, start from its own page. The YouTube to M4A converter has the M4A option set for you. The YouTube to WAV converter opens with WAV selected. Need the picture as well? The YouTube to MP4 page covers video files.

Questions about Mp3ify

Which format should I pick for music?

MP3 is the safe choice. It plays in almost every app, car and speaker, and the file keeps the video thumbnail as cover art.

Why is my M4A file so much smaller than the MP3?

M4A uses AAC, which needs fewer bits for the same length. That makes it a good fit for speech, where a small file matters more than the last bit of detail.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. You paste a link in the browser on your phone or computer, and the file downloads like any other.

Some videos do not convert. Why?

Private, deleted or region-blocked videos cannot be read without a login, so the tool cannot fetch their sound. Videos with an age check may fail for the same reason.

Mp3ify is an independent tool and has no link to YouTube or Google. Please convert only recordings you made yourself or have permission to keep.
