Why M4A suits spoken audio
M4A is the file type Apple uses for music and podcasts. Inside it is AAC, a codec that keeps voices clear at a low bit rate. For a one-hour interview, a lecture or a sermon, that means a file that still fits on a phone that is almost full.
In our test, a 93-second clip became an M4A file of about 0.6 MB. The same clip as MP3 was about 3.9 MB, more than six times larger. At that rate one hour of speech is roughly 23 MB as M4A and about 150 MB as MP3.
Where M4A files play
- iPhone and iPad: open the file in the Files app, or add it to the Music app on a Mac.
- Android: most music and podcast players open M4A without extra apps.
- Windows and macOS: the built-in media players handle it, and so does VLC.
- Editors: GarageBand imports it directly; Audacity needs its free FFmpeg add-on for M4A.
Make an M4A file
- Find the video on YouTube and copy its link. On a phone, tap Share and then Copy link.
- Paste the link into the input box above.
- Leave the format menu on M4A. This page sets it for you.
- Tap Download and wait while the bar fills. When "Download ready" appears, tap Download on the result card.
On an iPhone, Safari puts the file in the Downloads folder of the Files app. On Android, look in the Downloads app or in your browser's download list.
M4A, MP3 or WAV?
Choose M4A when you mostly listen to voices and want to save space. Pick MP3 on the Mp3ify homepage when you want a file for a music library or an older device that does not know M4A. When you plan to edit the sound, the WAV converter gives you an uncompressed file. For the video itself, use YouTube to MP4.
Tips for long recordings
Hour-long talks take longer to prepare than short clips, so keep the tab open until the result card appears. If your browser asks where to save, pick a folder that syncs with your phone. Rename the file afterwards if the video title is very long; the name has no effect on playback.
For a series of lectures, convert one video at a time and number the files as you save them. Your player then lists them in the right order, and you can pick up where you stopped.
Offline listening saves data
Playing a saved M4A file needs no connection at all. On a train or a flight you can listen to a whole lecture series without using mobile data, and with the screen off the phone uses less battery than a video stream would. Download the files at home on Wi-Fi, and they are ready when you leave.
M4A questions
Is M4A the same as AAC?
Almost. AAC is the sound codec, and M4A is the container file that holds it. The format menu also has a plain AAC entry in case a device asks for that.
Will M4A sound worse than MP3?
For speech you will rarely hear a difference. For music with lots of detail, the 320 kbps MP3 is the larger and safer choice.
Can I add M4A files to a podcast app?
Many podcast apps only play shows from a feed. A music player or the Files app on iPhone is the easier place for single M4A files.
Can my car play M4A?
Many newer car stereos can, but older ones often read only MP3. If your car skips the file, convert the video again and switch the menu to MP3.
Does the M4A file include the video?
No. It holds only the sound, which is why it stays so small.
Mp3ify does not belong to YouTube or Google. Only save talks and shows you have the right to keep.
